Dexlansoprazole reduces the production of stomach acid and is used mainly for acid reflux and erosive esophagitis.

1. Indications

Erosive esophagitis (EE) — for healing.
GERD / acid reflux with heartburn.
Maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis and relief of heartburn.

2. Benefits

Reduces excessive stomach acid.
Helps heal acid-related damage to the esophagus.
Relieves heartburn, acid reflux and related GERD symptoms.
Dual delayed-release formulation provides two phases of drug release.

3. Contraindications

Do not use in patients with:

Allergy/hypersensitivity to dexlansoprazole or any component.
Use of rilpivirine-containing medicines.

4. Common Side Effects

Possible adverse effects include:

Headache
Diarrhea
Abdominal pain/discomfort
Nausea
Vomiting
Flatulence

Long-term PPI treatment may require monitoring for problems such as low magnesium, vitamin B12 deficiency, bone fractures and certain intestinal infections.

5. Warnings & Precautions

Use with medical supervision in patients with:

Liver disease
Long-term PPI treatment
History/risk of osteoporosis or fractures
Unexplained or persistent gastrointestinal symptoms

Seek medical attention for difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss or severe persistent abdominal symptoms.

6. Usage / Dosage

For healing erosive esophagitis, the usual recommended dose is:

60 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks.

For maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis or symptomatic non-erosive GERD, the usual dose is 30 mg once daily, rather than 60 mg.

How to take:

Can be taken with or without food.
Swallow the capsule whole.
Do not crush or chew the capsule.
