Sertraline is a prescription antidepressant used for several mood and anxiety-related disorders.

1. Indications

Sertraline 50 mg may be prescribed for:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Panic Disorder
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD)
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

5. Warnings & Precautions

Important:

  • Antidepressants can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors in children, adolescents and young adults, particularly when starting treatment or changing the dose. Close monitoring is important.
  • Sertraline can cause serotonin syndrome, especially when combined with other serotonergic medicines.
  • It may increase the risk of bleeding, particularly with NSAIDs, aspirin, warfarin or other anticoagulants.
  • Patients with bipolar disorder should be assessed for possible mania/hypomania before treatment.
  • Do not stop sertraline suddenly; the dose is generally reduced gradually to minimize withdrawal/discontinuation symptoms.

6. Usage / Dosage

For adults with depression, the usual starting dose is:

50 mg once daily.

For panic disorder, PTSD and social anxiety disorder, treatment may be started at 25 mg once daily and increased to 50 mg after one week if appropriate.

Depending on response and tolerability, the dose can generally be increased by 25–50 mg at intervals of at least one week, up to a usual maximum of 200 mg/day for MDD, OCD, panic disorder, PTSD and social anxiety disorder.

How to take:

  • Take once daily, at approximately the same time each day.
  • It may be taken with or without food.
  • Take only the dose prescribed by the doctor.
  • Do not discontinue abruptly.
