Uses:
EXTO (Escitalopram) is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant used to treat:
- Major depressive disorder (Depression)
- Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
- Panic disorder
- Social anxiety disorder (as prescribed)
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in some cases (off-label)
How It Works:
Escitalopram increases the level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that helps regulate mood, anxiety, and emotions. This helps reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety.
Dosage:
- Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
- Usually taken once daily, with or without food.
- Swallow the tablet with water.
- Do not stop taking it suddenly, as withdrawal symptoms can occur.
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
- Trouble sleeping or drowsiness
- Increased sweating
- Fatigue
- Sexual side effects (reduced libido or delayed ejaculation)
Serious Side Effects (Seek Immediate Medical Care):
- Suicidal thoughts or worsening depression (especially in young adults)
- Severe allergic reaction
- Serotonin syndrome (fever, agitation, muscle stiffness, rapid heartbeat)
- Seizures
- Irregular heartbeat
Precautions:
- Use only under medical supervision.
- Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
- Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, epilepsy, bipolar disorder, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking to avoid drug interactions.
