Drug class: Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) — reduces stomach acid.

1. Indications

Dexlansoprazole 30 mg is commonly used for:

• GERD (acid reflux) and associated heartburn
• Non-erosive GERD
• Maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis
• Acid-related symptoms such as frequent heartburn.

2. Benefits

• Reduces production of stomach acid.
• Helps relieve heartburn and acid reflux.
• Helps heal and maintain healing of acid-damaged esophageal tissue.
• The dual delayed-release formulation provides two phases of drug release.

3. Contraindications

Do not use if:

• There is a known allergy/hypersensitivity to dexlansoprazole or any component.
• The patient is taking a rilpivirine-containing medicine.

4. Common Side Effects

Possible side effects include:

• Headache
• Diarrhea
• Abdominal/stomach discomfort
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Flatulence

Long-term PPI therapy can have additional risks, including certain intestinal infections and nutrient/mineral-related problems; prolonged use should therefore be reviewed by a healthcare professional.

5. Warnings & Precautions

Use with medical advice if the patient has:

• Liver disease
• A history of osteoporosis or fractures
• Persistent or unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms
• Long-term need for acid-suppression treatment

Seek medical attention for difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, severe/persistent abdominal pain, or severe allergic symptoms.

6. Usage / Dosage

For adults, 30 mg once daily is an established dose for symptomatic non-erosive GERD and for maintenance of healed erosive esophagitis. Healing active erosive esophagitis generally uses 60 mg once daily for up to 8 weeks, according to the prescribing information.

How to take:

• Can be taken with or without food.
• Swallow the capsule whole; do not crush or chew the delayed-release contents.
