Desloratadine is an antihistamine used mainly to relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and urticaria (hives).
Desloratadine 5 mg is used for:
- Allergic rhinitis
- Sneezing
- Runny or itchy nose
- Nasal and throat itching
- Red, watery or itchy eyes
- Chronic urticaria (hives)
- Relief of itching and reduction of the number/size of hives

Desloratadine selectively blocks histamine H1 receptors, reducing the effects of histamine released during an allergic reaction.
3. Usage / Dosage
Adults and adolescents 12 years and older:
5 mg once daily.
- Take with or without food.
- Swallow with water.
- Take at approximately the same time each day.
- Do not take more than the recommended dose unless prescribed.
For children under 12 years, an age-appropriate formulation and dose should be used rather than automatically giving a 5 mg tablet.
4. Contraindications
Do not use Desloratadine in patients with:
- Known allergy to Desloratadine
- Allergy to loratadine or any ingredient in the formulation
Extra caution may be required in patients with significant kidney or liver impairment.
5. Side Effects
Common or possible side effects:
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue
- Drowsiness/sleepiness in some individuals
- Sore throat
- Nausea or stomach discomfort
Rare but serious:
- Severe allergic reaction
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
- Difficulty breathing
- Severe skin reaction
- Palpitations or rapid heartbeat
Seek urgent medical attention if signs of a serious allergic reaction occur.
6. Warnings & Precautions
- Although desloratadine is considered non-sedating/low-sedating, some people may still experience drowsiness.
- Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel sleepy or impaired.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease.
- Inform your doctor about other medicines you are taking.
- Do not exceed the recommended dose to obtain faster allergy relief.
7. Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
If pregnant or breastfeeding, use desloratadine only after discussing it with a healthcare professional, particularly if prolonged treatment is required.
8. Storage
Store at room temperature in a dry place, protected from excessive heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
