Description

PineFix 100 mg/5 mL Oral Suspension

Active Ingredient: Cefixime 100 mg/5 mL
Drug Class: Third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic
Dosage Form: Powder for oral suspension
Pack Size: 60 mL after reconstitution
Flavour: Chocolate flavour

1. Indications

Cefixime is used to treat susceptible bacterial infections, including:

  • Acute otitis media (middle-ear infection)
  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Uncomplicated gonorrhea, where appropriate
  • Other susceptible bacterial respiratory infections as prescribed

It does not treat viral infections such as common cold or influenza.

2. Benefits

  • Effective against a range of susceptible Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
  • Convenient once- or twice-daily oral dosing, depending on the prescribed dose.
  • Suitable for patients who require an oral cephalosporin antibiotic.
  • The suspension formulation is useful for children who have difficulty swallowing tablets.

3. Contraindications

Do not use cefixime in patients with:

  • Known allergy to cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics
  • Previous severe allergic reaction to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics—medical assessment is required because cross-reactivity can occur.

4. Side Effects

Common:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal/stomach discomfort
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion

Less common/serious:

  • Skin rash or itching
  • Severe allergic reaction
  • Severe or persistent diarrhea, which may indicate C. difficile-associated diarrhea
  • Changes in blood counts or liver function tests may rarely occur.

Seek urgent medical attention for facial/throat swelling, breathing difficulty, severe rash, or severe persistent diarrhea.

5. Warnings & Precautions

  • Use only for bacterial infections confirmed or strongly suspected to be susceptible.
  • Complete the prescribed course unless the doctor advises otherwise.
  • Tell the doctor about any history of cephalosporin/penicillin allergy.
  • Dose adjustment may be necessary in significant kidney impairment.
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms.
  • If severe diarrhea occurs during or after treatment, contact a doctor rather than self-treating with anti-diarrheal medicines.

6. Usage / Dosage

Children 6 months and older: The usual cefixime dose is 8 mg/kg/day, given once daily or divided into 4 mg/kg every 12 hours, according to the doctor’s prescription.

For the 100 mg/5 mL suspension:

1 mL = 40 mg cefixime.

The exact volume depends on the child’s weight and the infection being treated.

Adults and children ≥50 kg: The usual dose is 200 mg/day, either once daily or divided into two 100 mg doses, depending on the indication.

Important: Do not determine a child’s dose from age alone. The prescriber should calculate the dose according to body weight, infection, kidney function, and local prescribing guidance.

7. Reconstitution & Storage

  • Add the required amount of clean water according to the manufacturer’s instructions to make the final volume of 60 mL.
  • Shake well after adding water.
  • Shake well before each dose.
  • Use the supplied measuring device for accurate dosing.
  • Follow the product leaflet for the exact storage period after reconstitution, as this can vary by formulation/manufacturer.

8. Packing Size

60 mL when reconstituted — 100 mg/5 mL oral suspension.
