1. Indications

Risperidone may be prescribed for:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar I disorder — manic or mixed episodes
  • Irritability associated with autistic disorder in certain approved age groups
  • Certain severe behavioral symptoms when specifically prescribed by a doctor

3. Usage / Dosage

How to take:

  • Antipsychotics including risperidone are associated with increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis and are not approved for this use.
  • Monitor weight, blood glucose and lipid levels when clinically appropriate.
  • Use caution in patients with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular risk.
  • Risperidone can cause drowsiness and may impair driving.
  • Avoid or limit alcohol because it may increase sedation.

7. Important Drug Interactions

Risperidone can interact with:

  • Alcohol and other sedating medicines
  • Blood-pressure-lowering medicines
  • Fluoxetine and paroxetine, which can increase risperidone exposure
  • Carbamazepine and certain enzyme-inducing medicines, which can reduce risperidone exposure
  • Other medicines that can affect cardiac rhythm

8. Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be discussed with a doctor. Risperidone and its active metabolite can pass into breast milk.
