1. Indications

Sertraline is used for the treatment of:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Panic disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Social anxiety disorder / social phobia
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)

2. Benefits / Therapeutic Effects

3. Contraindications

Do not use sertraline in patients with:

  • Known allergy to sertraline or any component of the formulation.
  • Current use of MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI.
  • Use of pimozide, unless specifically directed by a specialist.
  • Previous serious reaction to sertraline.

4. Side Effects

5. Warnings & Precautions

  • Antidepressants may increase suicidal thoughts/behaviors in children, adolescents and young adults, particularly when treatment is started or the dose is changed.
  • Use cautiously in patients with bipolar disorder, seizures, liver disease, bleeding disorders, or low sodium levels.
  • Sertraline may increase bleeding risk, especially with NSAIDs, aspirin or anticoagulants.
  • Avoid or limit alcohol because it may worsen adverse effects.
  • Do not stop sertraline suddenly; gradual dose reduction is generally recommended to reduce discontinuation symptoms.
  • Tell the doctor about all medicines and supplements being taken.

6. Usage / Dosage

Adults: The usual starting dose depends on the indication and may be 25–50 mg once daily. The dose may be gradually increased according to clinical response and tolerability.

Usual therapeutic range: 50–200 mg once daily.

For a 100 mg tablet, the patient should take it only at the dose prescribed by the doctor. It may be taken with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

Important: Do not increase, decrease, or discontinue the dose without medical supervision.
